We then head off for the ‘Bear Paw Lodge’ near Vallecito, 20 miles NE of Durango. This drive takes at least 45 minutes – the Iowans are by now understanding that in the mountains, we plan in terms of time ‘spent in the saddle’, not in terms of mileage. The lodge is operated by a retired couple from Texas & Pat goes out of her way to make sure you are comfortable and have everything you need. An added bonus to staying at the Bear Paw, is that Virginia’s Steakhouse is right across the street – you can relax, have a great meal, dance to live music, then safely walk home. There is also a General Store within walking distance that serves up some great breakfast burritos in the morning. Our friends, Larry & Diana are staying at the campground just down the road at Vallecito Reservoir – check out their new camper – pretty nice set up for hauling your bike. Have to throw in this photo of the three studs too, actually the ‘bros-in-law’ - Loren on the left, my husband Chris in the middle, and Larry on the right.

That night we hang out on the deck at our cabin, the Panda, and get an unexpected visitor. This raccoon apparently smelled our popcorn, so Diane kept throwing it to him and he kept getting closer & closer until finally he was on the deck with us. ‘Coonie’ kept us entertained for quite awhile.
