| We tried riding to Crested Butte for dinner, but the highway (& it’s the only highway in & out) was under construction. If you do have the time, this little, secluded mountain town is worth visiting. | |
| We get back to Gunnison and order pizza & Chinese food. Mileage for the day = 226 miles; again, some very tired, but very content riders. | |
| Next day, we’re finally off for Durango! Most Coloradoans are familiar with scenic Hwy 110 from Ouray, through Silverton, to Durango. It takes you across the magnificent San Juan Mountains, comprised of several, rugged 14,000 ft peaks that are the remains of ancient volcanoes. This is a busy highway; narrow in some places, with steep drop offs & no guard rails, so take your time. You’ll cross over two more passes, Red Mountain at 11,019 ft and Molas Pass at 10,910 ft. We stopped in Silverton & ate lunch at the historic Handlebar Saloon – their motto? “The liver is evil, it must be punished!” Even if you don’t plan on stopping, be sure to ride through Silverton and get a feel for what a boom town this was back in the mining days of the 1800’s. | |
