The next morning everyone is up & psyched to do some more mountain riding. We’ve heard that the stretch from Dolores (west of Durango) up north to Telluride (Hwy 145) is spectacular & it was! You follow the Dolores River, and as you’re winding in & out of these spectacular curves you’re amazed that it just gets more beautiful as you go. I think it was pretty unanimous that this ended up being everyone’s favorite ride. A great halfway point is the small town of Rico. We stopped at the ‘Enterprise Bar and Grill’, which turned out to be closed, but Jo, who was setting up for the night let us in anyway. She knows “that bikers need to stretch & quench their thirsts”. In fact, she was so friendly; we even stopped there on the way back.

This stretch of highway takes you over Lizard Head Pass, where there are great views of Matterhorn Peak and the Uncompahgre Mountain Range, and then down into Telluride in the valley. These are some of my favorite scenic shots from the trip – one is of the lake at the base of the mountains – as we we’re riding by, I remember thinking, how nice would it be to wake up to this view every day?
